Isaac and Rebekah
Isaac and Rebekah
Genesis 24 tells how Abraham’s servant travels to Abraham’s relatives, meets Rebekah at a well, and brings her to Canaan to become Isaac’s wife.
Isaac and Rebekah
Abraham calls his senior servant and gives him a difficult assignment: travel to Abraham’s extended family and find a wife for Isaac. Abraham insists that Isaac must not be taken back to the land Abraham left.
The servant travels with camels and gifts and stops near a well outside the city. There he prays for guidance, asking that the woman who offers water not only to him but also to his camels will be the one appointed for Isaac.
Before he finishes praying, Rebekah arrives. She gives him water and voluntarily draws enough for the camels as well. The servant watches carefully, then learns that she belongs to Abraham’s wider family.
At her household, the servant refuses to eat until he explains his mission. He recounts Abraham’s prosperity, Isaac’s place in the family, his own prayer at the well, and Rebekah’s immediate response. Her family recognizes the sequence as providential and agrees that she may go.
When departure is proposed, Rebekah herself is asked whether she will leave. She answers that she will go. Her family blesses her, and she travels with Abraham’s servant toward Canaan.
Isaac is in the field when the caravan approaches. Rebekah sees him, learns who he is, and covers herself with a veil. The servant tells Isaac everything that has happened.
Isaac brings Rebekah into Sarah’s tent, marries her, and loves her. Genesis closes the chapter by saying that Isaac is comforted after his mother’s death. The long journey has connected Abraham’s past family with the future of the covenant line.
