Balaam and the Donkey
Numbers 22 tells how Balaam travels after being summoned by Balak and how his donkey sees the angel of the LORD blocking the road before Balaam does.
Balaam and the Donkey
As Israel camps in the plains of Moab, King Balak becomes alarmed. He sends messengers to Balaam, a diviner known for pronouncing blessings and curses, asking him to come and curse Israel. Balaam says he must speak only what God permits.
After further messengers arrive, Balaam eventually sets out. On the road, however, an angel of the LORD stands in the way with a drawn sword. Balaam does not see the angel. His donkey does. The animal turns off the road into a field, and Balaam strikes it to force it back.
The angel then stands in a narrow path between vineyard walls. The donkey presses against the wall, crushing Balaam’s foot, and Balaam strikes it again. Finally the angel blocks a place so narrow that there is nowhere to turn. The donkey lies down under Balaam, and he strikes it a third time.
Then the LORD opens the donkey’s mouth. The animal asks Balaam why he has beaten it three times. Balaam, still angry, answers the donkey. The exchange turns the scene upside down: the celebrated seer is arguing with the animal that has perceived the spiritual danger he cannot see.
God then opens Balaam’s eyes, and he sees the angel with the drawn sword. Balaam bows down. The angel explains that the donkey’s actions saved Balaam from danger and again restricts him to speaking only the word he is given.
When Balaam finally meets Balak, the king repeatedly positions him to curse Israel. Yet the speeches that follow become blessings instead. Balak grows increasingly frustrated, but Balaam insists that he cannot go beyond what God gives him to say. The donkey episode therefore anticipates the larger point of the Balaam narrative: human plans cannot simply convert God’s blessing into a curse.
