Absalom’s Rebellion
Absalom’s Rebellion
2 Samuel 15–18 tells how David’s son Absalom wins support, declares himself king, forces David from Jerusalem, and dies during the resulting battle.
Absalom’s Rebellion
Absalom positions himself near the city gate, where legal disputes come before the king. He tells petitioners that their cases are good but that no representative of the king is available to hear them properly.
By presenting himself as the leader who would provide justice, Absalom steals the hearts of many Israelites.
He eventually goes to Hebron and has himself proclaimed king. Messengers spread the conspiracy, and support grows.
David learns that the population is turning toward Absalom and decides to leave Jerusalem rather than allow the city to become an immediate battlefield.
The king crosses the Kidron and leaves the capital in grief. Loyal supporters remain with him, while Absalom enters Jerusalem.
War follows. Before battle David orders his commanders to deal gently with Absalom for his sake.
Absalom’s forces are defeated. While riding, Absalom becomes caught in a tree and is left hanging as his mule continues on.
Joab ignores David’s request and kills Absalom.
When news reaches David, victory gives way to mourning. He weeps for his son and cries that he wishes he had died instead. The political rebellion has ended, but the king experiences the outcome primarily as a devastating family loss.
