Abraham Rescues Lot

BIBLE STORY

Abraham Rescues Lot

Genesis 14 tells how Abram pursues a coalition of kings who captured Lot, rescues the captives, and later meets Melchizedek and the king of Sodom.

THE STORY

Abraham Rescues Lot

A conflict among regional kings reaches the cities of the Jordan plain. Sodom and Gomorrah are defeated, their goods are taken, and Lot, Abram’s nephew, is carried away with his possessions.

A survivor reaches Abram with the news. Abram gathers trained men from his household and pursues the invading force northward. He divides his forces by night, attacks, and drives the captors away. Lot, his possessions, the women, and the other captives are recovered.

On Abram’s return, two kings meet him. The first is Melchizedek, king of Salem and priest of God Most High. Melchizedek brings bread and wine and blesses Abram, attributing the victory to God Most High. Abram gives him a tenth of what has been recovered.

The king of Sodom then asks Abram to return the people while keeping the goods for himself. Abram refuses to enrich himself from the king’s possessions. He does not want the king of Sodom to be able to claim that he made Abram rich.

The story therefore ends not simply with a military rescue but with contrasting responses to victory. Abram accepts the blessing spoken by Melchizedek while refusing to make the rescue an opportunity for personal enrichment from Sodom.
