Abraham and the Three Visitors
Abraham and the Three Visitors
Genesis 18 tells how Abraham welcomes three visitors near the oaks of Mamre and receives the renewed promise that Sarah will bear a son.
Abraham and the Three Visitors
Abraham is sitting at the entrance of his tent near the oaks of Mamre during the heat of the day when he sees three men standing nearby.
He runs to meet them, bows, and urgently offers water, rest, bread, and a meal.
Abraham asks Sarah to prepare bread while a servant prepares a calf. He sets the food before the visitors and stands nearby as they eat.
The visitors ask where Sarah is. Abraham answers that she is in the tent.
One announces that he will return at the appointed time and Sarah will have a son.
Sarah overhears from the tent entrance. Because both she and Abraham are old, she laughs to herself at the thought of bearing a child.
The LORD asks Abraham why Sarah laughed and poses the question that defines the scene: is anything too difficult for the LORD?
Sarah becomes afraid and denies laughing, but the response is direct: she did laugh.
The visitors then turn toward Sodom, moving the narrative into Abraham’s intercession for the city. The promise heard beside the tent will be fulfilled in the birth of Isaac in Genesis 21.
