The Story of Jeroboam
Jeroboam son of Nebat first appears as a capable official under Solomon. The prophet Ahijah symbolically tears a garment into twelve pieces and promises Jeroboam rule over ten tribes because of Solomon’s unfaithfulness. Solomon then seeks to kill Jeroboam, who flees to Egypt.
After Solomon’s death, Jeroboam returns and joins the northern tribes in asking Rehoboam to reduce their burdens. When Rehoboam refuses, the northern tribes make Jeroboam king.
Concerned that worship in Jerusalem may draw the people back toward the house of David, Jeroboam establishes golden calves at Bethel and Dan, creates shrines, appoints priests outside the Levitical pattern described by Kings, and institutes a festival. The book of Kings repeatedly uses “the sin of Jeroboam” as a standard for evaluating later northern kings.
