Ishmael is conceived when Sarah gives Hagar to Abraham. Before his birth, the angel of the LORD names him and promises numerous descendants. Abraham is eighty-six when Ishmael is born.

When God later promises Isaac, Abraham asks that Ishmael might live under God’s blessing. God promises to bless Ishmael and make him fruitful, while establishing the covenant through Isaac. After Isaac’s birth, Hagar and Ishmael are sent away, but God preserves them in the wilderness. Ishmael grows up, becomes an archer, marries an Egyptian woman, and fathers twelve sons.
