The Story of Hur
Hur first appears during Israel’s battle with Amalek. As Joshua fights below, Moses stands on the hill with the staff of God. When Moses’ hands grow weary, Aaron and Hur place a stone beneath him and support his hands until sunset, while Israel prevails.
Hur appears again when Moses ascends Sinai. Moses tells Israel’s elders that Aaron and Hur are with them and that anyone with a dispute can go to them. The biblical text gives no further direct narrative about this Hur.
Later genealogical passages name men called Hur, including a Hur associated with Judah and the ancestry of Bezalel. The text does not explicitly state in Exodus 17 or 24 that Moses’ associate is the same individual as every later Hur, so those identifications should be treated cautiously.
