BIOGRAPHY

The Story of Ahab

Ahab succeeds his father Omri as king of Israel. First Kings says he does more to provoke the LORD than the kings before him, highlighting his marriage to Jezebel, worship of Baal, and construction of a Baal temple in Samaria.

Elijah announces drought during Ahab’s reign and later confronts him at Mount Carmel. Ahab also fights wars with Ben-hadad of Aram and receives prophetic help, but is condemned after allowing Ben-hadad to escape under a treaty.

In the account of Naboth’s vineyard, Ahab desires Naboth’s ancestral property. Jezebel arranges false accusations and Naboth’s execution, after which Ahab takes possession. Elijah confronts Ahab and announces judgment. Ahab humbles himself, and the timing of part of the judgment is delayed.

Ahab later dies in battle at Ramoth-gilead despite disguising himself, after the prophet Micaiah had warned of defeat.
