Best Bible Verses about Death in the Bible

Death is unfortunately an inevitable process during our lifetime. Death of a loved one is often the ultimate grief. No matter the timing, experiencing loss leaves a painful void in our lives. There is often times where no one can say anything to bring us comfort during this process, so finding what God wants us to know is more important than ever. What does God tell us about death?

Sorrow Does Come to Earth

Ecclesiatstes 3:4- A time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance.

Psalm 119:28- My soul is weary with sorrow; strengthen me according to your word.

Ecclesiastes 12:7- And the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.

God does not promise us a life without death, pain and sorrow. Part of human life on earth involves death, and with death, comes grieving. This time of sorrow is sacred, for grieving death is unique to every individual. God acknowledges our time and need to grieve by telling us that they have a place in our lives. Acknowledging our grief is full of importance.

Our Feelings of Sorrow Will Not Be Forever

Psalm 30:5- For his anger lasts only a moment, but His favor lasts a lifetime; weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.

Psalm 30:11- You turned my wailing into dancing; you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy, that my heart may sing your praises and not be silent. Lord my God, I will praise you forever.

Romans 8:18- I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.

Luke 6:21- Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.

God acknowledges our time to grieve without putting a time limit for the process, but lets us know that we will not have feelings of mourning forever. Days of sorrow will be followed with days of joy and healing. God also tells us that no matter how great our grief may be, the reward we reap from God will far surpass anything we can imagine. Healing will come, and the glory that we long for will be revealed in His timing. Hold strong, continue to keep one foot in front of the other. These days of grief are temporary.

God Provides Solace In Our Grief

John 14:1-4- Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, there where I am you may be also. And you know the way to where I am going.

Psalm 23:4- Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

Psalm 73:26- My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

Matthew 11:28- Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

Matthew 5:4- Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

Psalm 34:18- The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.

God reminds us that He is with us during the time of death. He promises to provide us with comfort and rest, for grieving takes a toll on our physical body as well. He promises us that believing in Him gives us the ability to not fear death and sorrow, for we know that glory is not far behind.

Death is Not Final

Luke 23:43- And he said to him, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with my in Paradise.”

John 3:16- For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

John 11:26- And everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?

Romans 8:13- For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

Philippians 1:21- For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.

John 14:6- Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

As a follower of Christ, death is not our conclusion. We are reassured that living this life for Christ is to live with Him in heaven, without pain and sorrow. A believer that passes away in this life is gaining their glory and reward that is promised to us. The only way to join Christ in Heaven is to continue to follow Him. When we lose our loved ones, or hear a devastating diagnosis, we can find comfort in the promise of a new life with Him. While God understands that sorrow comes with death, He also does not want us to fear death by giving us this promise.

Death Has Been Defeated

2 Timothy 1:10- But now has been revealed by the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.

Isaiah 25:8- He will swallow up death for all time, and the Lord God will wipe tears away from all faces, And He will remove the reproach of His people from all the earth; for the Lord has spoken.

Revelation 21:4- and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain, the first things have passed away.

1 Corinthians 15:25-26- For He must reign until He has put all His enemies under His feet. The last enemy that will be abolished is death.

1 Corinthians 15:55- O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?

God goes beyond telling us that death is not our last step by letting us know it has been completely defeated. There will come a time that death will not happen, and His people will return with Him in heaven to escape death once and for all. We will no longer be separated with those that we have grieved in death. The last thing to be rid of this world will be death, and Jesus has conquered that for us by His sacrifice on the cross.

We Need to Offer Comfort To Those In Grief

Ecclesiastes 7:2- It is better to go to a house of mourning than to go to a house of feasting, for death is the destiny of everyone; the living should take this to heart.

Grief is all consuming, and a difficult road to walk without support. We often see meal trains, sympathy cards, phone calls, and visits to those in mourning as a way to show our support. These gestures are a direct motion from God, as he tells us that we need to support one another. At some point, we will all endure death and grief, bonding us through pain. We support those in mourning, as we will also need the same support during our own bereavements.
